Ashtanga yoga focuses on a specific sequence of postures (asanas), which are linked through movement (vinyasas) and breath (pranayama). The unique aspects to this practice include engagement of the internal locks (bandas) and ujjayi breathing (sometimes called “ocean breath”) which are used to assist the regulation of the flow of energy or life force (prana). Ashtanga is an athletic flow combining strength, flexibility and stamina for a complete practice.

Ashtanga is designed to be a daily practice.

Self practice with an Instructor assisting you. This class is taught as Ashtanga Yoga is taught in India, you are not cued through the class, you do your yoga practice while an instructor is present to assist you. Students practice the Ashtanga sequence of postures to their own ability and at their own pace. The teacher assists each student individually by giving physical adjustments and verbal instructions. This is the best class to get individual attention during a class setting, it is the preferred form of practice!

Beginners are encouraged to come to mysore in order start to develop a yoga practice.  There is no experience required for mysore just an eagerness to learn.  With this self paced system of learning the Ashtanga series you work at your pace with your teacher fine tuning the practice to your specific needs.   If you are new to ashtanga, it is recommended that you commit to coming to mysore twice a week for at least 2 months in order to commit the sequence to memory and build a strong foundation.
